Dennis Orr GlenMorin Dennis has been playing accordion since he was 14 years old. He started life as a musician playing the piano under the direction of his mother. When the family moved to Edmonton in 1957 he was introduced to master accordion teacher, Dick Jacobs, who fanned Dennis’ interest in the accordion into a lifelong passion. By the time Dennis was 17 he had won many local and regional competitions in Alberta and Canada and was playing regularly as a professional gig musician. He went on to attend the Universities of Alberta and Calgary and attained degrees in music education and conducting and became a concert band conductor in Alberta Schools. In 1998 Dennis attended a workshop directed by Muriel Johnstone who opened the door to the world of Scottish dance music. This led to the formation of his band ‘GlenMorin’ and to the development of the Alberta Scottish Dance Orchestra. Dennis is the director, resident conductor and founder of the Alberta Scottish Dance Orchestra. The performance group was conceived and initiated as the result of the dance activities needed to support the first annual Scot’s Gathering in Canmore in the fall of 2015.
