Lorraine McCormick and Peter McCormick The Spurtles A Lethbridge native born and bred, Lorraine McCormick completed a bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of Alberta. She taught piano for several decades before retiring to pursue other musical interests including the Celtic harp, alto recorder and handbells. She was active in Sweet Adelines, competing at the international level and once performing in Carnegie Hall. She played keyboard for four years with GlenMorin. Three years ago, she began playing for the Lethbridge SCD club as a member of a piano and recorder duo that calls itself "The Spurtles" with the motto “We’re here to stir things up!”. She arranged the music for her acapella quartet,“The Chordials”, and for her harp and recorder trio,“Cranachan”, and now does the same for The Spurtles. Husband Peter, who hails from Lacombe, is the other half of the duo. He was a political science professor at the University of Lethbridge for forty years before making the tenor recorder his retirement project. He too played with GlenMorin for four years and now devotes his spare time to searching out more music to add to their repertoire. In addition to the weekly Lethbridge SCD classes,The Spurtles have played as class musicians for workshops at Medicine Hat, Saskatoon and Calgary and for various socials and ceilidhs in Lethbridge. They have developed a deep appreciation for traditional Scottish music, and look forward to sharing it at the Lethbridge workshop.
